Background

OBSERVATION is my capstone project for a post-baccalaureate in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning at UC Berkeley. The project's scope spanned extensive research, conceptual development, detailed planning, and visual rendering of a landscape intervention.

Description

The Albany Bulb, once an active landfill from 1939 to 1983 near San Francisco, California, serves as a canvas for this project. This site, rich in industrial and social history, features strata of concrete, brick, and mining sediment that narrate the Bay Area's past akin to geological records.

In 2002, this former landfill was transformed into a public park, breathing new life into the refuse. The debris became a muse for artistic expression, with the landscape now punctuated by public art that weaves a contemporary narrative through murals, social hubs, and eclectic sculptures.

OBSERVATION is designed to celebrate this transformation by framing and showcasing the Bulb's geological tapestry. The intervention aims to render the subterranean visible, creating spaces where visitors can intimately engage with the Bulb's layers, thus accentuating its evolving identity shaped by human and natural forces.

The project underscores the intersection of art, history, and environmental design, inviting public interaction with a space that exemplifies change and resilience. OBSERVATION is not just a design project but a homage to the dynamic relationship between humans and landscapes.
